FRANK SINATRA AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1943 – 1948
I was responsible for the art direction and design of this cover, which pays tribute to Sinatra’s historic 1943 and 1945 Hollywood Bowl performances, where he became the first pop singer to take the stage at the classical venue. Inspired by the illustrated album covers of the 1940s, I created a painted composition in my signature style, drawing on archival imagery as a reference to ground the work in its era. An image of a woman in the crowd, holding binoculars, shaped the perspective, placing the viewer in her position and heightening the sense of anticipation. Using colour to evoke a warm California evening, colour blocking in deep purples, pinks, and blues evokes a warm California evening, while the Bowl’s arches and the orchestra silhouette root the artwork in its iconic setting. Archival photographs also inspired supporting design elements, including the label, keeping the entire package connected to its historical source material. The goal was not to recreate history but to capture the feeling of waiting for Sinatra to step up to the mic.
